Massage Therapy Program
Massage therapy services are performed by the Program Coordinator and a group of trained volunteer Licensed Massage Therapists (LMTs). We provide modified (patient- and environment-specific) massage therapy free of charge to patients and families in our three in-patient units. We offer chair massages to clinical staff for educational, self-care and stress management purposes. Additionally, we share educational materials with clinicians in order to raise awareness of the therapeutic value of massage therapy for patient care.
- All volunteer Massage Therapists in our program are licensed by New York State.
Our massage program offers individualized LMT orientation and ongoing mentorship to enable volunteers to acclimate effectively and confidently into the hospice environment. Our curriculum is designed to encourage volunteer LMTs to think differently about the application of massage therapy for people facing life limiting illnesses. Curriculum includes:
- Specifically modified and slow massage technique (with periodic review)
- Program operations training, such as record keeping, location of supplies, etc.
- Infection Control review
- Hospice Program and Bereavement overview
- Shadowing of Program Coordinator to observe techniques and protocols
The Massage Program Coordinator offers ongoing training, supervision, support, and debriefing of our LMT volunteers. Volunteers also have ongoing access to HCN support resources.
We are looking for volunteers to provide weekly 3 hour shifts at one of 3 inpatient units.
